How the safety sensors work
Every garage door opener made since the early 1990s has a pair of photo-eye sensors mounted a few inches above the floor on each side of the door. They project an invisible beam across the opening; if anything breaks that beam — a child, a pet, a bike — the door refuses to close or reverses immediately. It is the feature that prevents the door from closing on someone, so it is not something to bypass or disable.
Why sensors act up — and how we fix them
Most sensor problems are simple: a bumped bracket that knocked the alignment off, dirty or sun-glared lenses, a spider web or leaf across the beam, or a loose wire. Sometimes a sensor genuinely fails and needs replacing. We check the indicator lights, clean and realign the eyes so the beam is dead-on, repair or replace damaged wiring or a failed sensor, and test the door closing several times to confirm it stays down and still reverses on obstruction as it should. Why does my garage door reverse right before closing?

Can I just disconnect the sensors to make it close?
Please do not. The photo-eye sensors are the safety feature that stops the door closing on a person or pet. We realign or replace them so the door works correctly and safely, rather than bypassing them.
The little light on the sensor is blinking — what does that mean?
A blinking or off sensor light usually means the two eyes are not aligned or one is blocked or failing. It is a quick diagnosis. Call us and we will get the beam lined up and the door closing again.
