Fall Garage Door Maintenance Checklist for the Fox Valley

Fall is the best time to get your garage door ready for a Fox Valley winter. A little maintenance now prevents the cold-morning breakdown later. Here is a simple checklist Elgin and area homeowners can work through — and what to leave to a pro.
What you can safely do yourself
- Lubricate the moving parts with a garage-door-specific lithium or silicone spray on the rollers, hinges and springs — not WD-40.
- Clean and test the safety sensors near the floor; wave a broom in the door’s path as it closes to confirm it reverses.
- Test the balance: pull the opener release and lift the door halfway by hand. If it will not stay put, the springs need professional attention.
- Tighten the visible hardware on the brackets and track — but never the bottom brackets, which are under spring tension.
- Check the weather seal along the bottom and replace it if it is cracked, to keep out cold and water.

What to leave to a professional
