7 Signs Your Garage Door Opener Is Failing (Batavia Edition)

Your garage door opener works hard — several cycles a day, year after year. When it starts to fail, it usually gives you warning. Here are the signs we tell Batavia homeowners to watch for.
The warning signs
- The motor runs but the door does not move. Often a stripped drive gear — though a broken spring can look the same.
- The door reverses before it closes. Almost always the safety sensors need cleaning or realignment.
- Loud grinding or rattling from the opener unit as it runs.
- Slow or hesitant movement compared to when it was new.
- Intermittent response — the remote works sometimes and not others.
- The opener light or logic board acts up, often after a power surge.
- No rolling-code security or auto-reverse — a sign the unit is simply too old to be safe.
Repair or replace?
Not every failing opener needs replacing. A worn gear, a bad capacitor or a failed sensor is often an economical repair on an otherwise sound unit. But a very old, loud opener with no modern safety features is usually better replaced with a quiet belt-drive model that adds battery backup and smartphone control. Do not ignore the safety features
One thing we never do is bypass an opener’s safety sensors or auto-reverse to force a door closed. Those features exist to stop the door closing on a person, pet or car. If yours is not working right, have it fixed properly rather than defeated.
