Why Garage Door Springs Break in Winter (Geneva Homeowners, Take Note)

If you live in Geneva, you already know Fox Valley winters are hard on everything — and your garage door springs are no exception. The single most common repair we run on a cold January morning is a snapped torsion spring, and the cold is usually the reason.
Why cold weather breaks springs
Garage door springs do the heavy lifting every time the door opens. They are wound steel under high tension, and steel contracts and grows more brittle as the temperature drops. A spring that was already near the end of its roughly 10,000-cycle life will often let go on the first truly cold morning of the season, with a bang loud enough to wake the house. Add in the extra strain of a door whose rollers and hinges have stiffened in the cold, and winter becomes prime spring-breaking season.
Warning signs before a spring fails
Springs rarely fail without hints. Watch for a door that feels heavier than usual, opens unevenly or crookedly, moves jerkily, or makes new popping and grinding noises. A visible gap in the torsion spring above the door is a clear sign it has already snapped. If you notice any of these, stop using the door before it strands your car.
What to do — and what not to do
If a spring breaks, leave the door down and do not keep pressing the opener — forcing it can burn out the motor. And please do not try to replace the spring yourself: garage door springs store enormous energy and cause serious injuries every year. Prevent the winter breakdown
A simple fall tune-up — balancing the door, lubricating the springs and rollers, and checking for wear — is the cheapest way to avoid a January emergency.
